Benard Omondi Sunga, a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) service member, is among three suspects arrested in Homabay Sub-County for possession of a rhino horn valued at approximately Ksh 2.9 million.

The operation, conducted by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), officers from Homabay Police Station and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) personnel from Ruma National Park, marks a significant breakthrough in the fight against wildlife trafficking.

Sunga, alongside George Oloo and Argwings Watta, was apprehended at Rodi Market during a coordinated sting operation.

The suspects were intercepted inside a black Toyota Kluger, registration number KBM 463G.

A meticulous search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a rhino horn weighing 2.9 kilograms, concealed within.

The trio has since been arraigned in court to face charges of wildlife trafficking, a serious offence under Kenyan law.

The DCI, on X, lauded the successful collaboration with KWS, emphasizing the importance of inter-agency efforts in combating wildlife crimes.

“This operation underscores our commitment to protecting Kenya’s wildlife and bringing traffickers to justice,” the DCI noted.

The Kenya Wildlife Service has reiterated its call for public cooperation in reporting wildlife-related crimes, emphasizing the critical need to protect endangered species like rhinos.

Authorities have vowed to remain vigilant in combating the illegal wildlife trade, which poses a significant threat to Kenya’s natural heritage.

Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities to aid in curbing wildlife trafficking and ensuring the safety of the country’s iconic species.
