The Kenya Association of Air Operators (KAAO) has applauded President William Ruto’s decision to cancel the Privately Initiated Proposal (PIP) for the concessioning of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The association believes that this move is a step in the right direction towards a more transparent and inclusive approach to modernizing the airport.
In a statement released Wednesday, KAAO reiterated its concerns regarding the proposed concession, citing potential challenges to transparency and inclusivity.
The association argued that the one-bidder process lacked adequate competition and failed to consider the broader interests of all stakeholders.
While acknowledging the urgent need for investment in JKIA, KAAO emphasized the importance of a competitive bidding process and comprehensive stakeholder consultation.
The association called for a feasibility study that prioritizes critical infrastructure upgrades, including a second runway, and aligns with the National Aviation Policy.
KAAO also highlighted the importance of adhering to global best practices in airport concessioning, referencing IATA’s “Balanced concession for the airport industry” guidance booklet.
The association expressed its commitment to supporting a vision for JKIA that promotes sustainable growth and strengthens Kenya’s position in the global aviation market.
