Jebet and Simui claim victory at 4th Sirikwa Classic

10 km world record holder Agnes Jebet Ng’etich and World 10,000 m silver medallist Daniel Ebenyo Simiu are the winners of the 10 km races of the 4th Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour held today at the Lobo Village, Kapseret, in Eldoret City.

Jebet, who is also the fastest half marathoner, led from start to finish, winning gold in 32 minutes and 42 seconds, 10 seconds ahead of Janeth Chepngetich, who won silver, while Mirriam Chebet completed the podium positions in 34 minutes and 9 seconds.

Hot favourite tripple Olympic champion in 1500m Faith Kipyegon dropped out in the 3rd lap.

Simiu Ebenyo dominated the men’s race to successfully defend his title in 29 minutes and 57 seconds to bag gold, followed by Gideon Ronoh, who clocked 30 minutes and 7 seconds to win silver, while Nicholas Kipkorir finished a distant 3rd in 30 minutes and 15 seconds.

Kevin Kiprop and Cynthia Chepkurui won the under 20 categories.

Kiprop bagged gold in 24.24 minutes, while Frankline Chebet and Festus Kimorwo won silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Chepkurui crossed the finish line in 20 minutes and 37 seconds, followed by Joyline Chepkemoi and Diana Chepkemoi in 2nd and 3rd positions in that order.

Former world under 20 champions Reynold Cheruiyot and Purity Chepkurui won the 2km loop races.

Over 1,000 athletes competed in the core events of the day, which were curtain-raised by the kids’ races.

Today’s race marked the end of the cross-country season.
