The nominee for Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has pledged to turn police stations into centers of excellence and enhance accountability of police officers if confirmed by parliament.
Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Administration and Internal Security and the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations for vetting, Kanja also said he will work closely with the National Police Service Commission to improve the welfare of police officers.
The nominee committed to work with other security agencies to eradicate banditry in the north through enhancing the capacity of police reservists.
MPs engaged the nominee on strategies he would employ to enhance coordination between the police, the national intelligence service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
The lawmakers also probed Kanja’s role as deputy inspector general of police, in the recent shooting of anti-government protestors.
Kanja pledged to enhance accountability in the police service and improve the welfare of police officers.
