How to use vinegar as a cleaning agent

Vinegar is an acidic liquid produced through the fermentation of ethanol by acetic acid bacteria. It is used in cooking not only for its flavour qualities but also for its chemical properties. When used as a base, vinegar can add extra vibrancy and tanginess to a variety of foods.

However, vinegar can also be used as a natural cleaning agent.

 Here are some ways you can use vinegar to clean

As an All-purpose cleaner

By mixing equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle, you can create an all-purpose cleaner for surfaces like countertops, windows, and mirrors. Vinegar is great at getting rid of smudges and water stains leaving your surfaces shining.

Bathroom cleaner

To get rid of tough stains in your bathroom like in the grout between the tiles, vinegar can worl wonders. For a stronger bathroom cleaner, mix 1 part vinegar with 1 part dish soap and 2 parts water. Spray the mixture onto the bathroom surfaces, leave for 15 – 30 minutes and scrub with a brush or sponge.

Floor cleaner

Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to a gallon of warm water to create a floor cleaner that works well on most surfaces, including hardwood floors. This mixture will leave your floors shiny and without streaks.

Toilet cleaner 

Not only does vinegar get rid of tough stains in the bathroom, it can also eliminate odours. Pour 1 cup of vinegar into the toilet bowl and let it sit for at least 30 minutes before scrubbing with a toilet brush.

Microwave cleaner

Vinegar is also a great way to rid of smells and greasy food stains from your microwave. Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with 1/2 cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 5 minutes, then wipe the inside of the microwave with a damp cloth.

Laundry booster

Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle of your washing machine to soften clothes and remove odours.

Remember to always test a small area before using vinegar on a new surface, and avoid using it on natural stone surfaces as it can etch or damage the stone.
