Health Ministry to kick off first phase of polio vaccination campaign

The Ministry of Health is set to kick off a 5-day supplementary polio vaccination campaign in response to an outbreak after 5 cases of derived poliovirus type 2 were detected in Kakuma refugee camp and Kamukunji in Nairobi.

The campaign which will kick-off from 2nd-6th October, is set to reach a target population of over 3.8 million children under the age of 10 yrs.

Speaking during a media engagement, Public Health principal secretary Mary Muthoni says the campaign will be carried out in 9 high risk counties of Nairobi, Kiambu, Busia, Bungoma, Turkana, West Pokot, Marsabit, Transnzoia and Machakos.

The PS has urged parents and caregivers to avail their children for the vaccination.

The Ministry is also set to administer 14.6 million doses in the second phase in 2025.
