Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati will be laid to rest on March 8 in Kitale.
The family, which announced the burial plans, also revealed that Chebukati had been battling a recurring cancerous brain tumour, for which he underwent two surgeries in Germany.
Contrary to social media reports claiming he was clinically dead, the family spokesperson Eric Nyongesa provided details of his final moments, including his hospitalisation on February 12 in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he suffered a cardiac arrest on February 20, 2025.
Chebukati served as the IEBC chairperson from 2017 on a six-year tenure until his retirement in 2023 January after overseeing his second General Elections in August 2022.
He succeeded Ahmed Isaack Hassan, the first IEBC Chairperson under the new Constitution in 2010.
