Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has officially launched the distribution of 5,000 coconut seedlings to farmers across the county in a bid to promote agricultural sustainability and economic empowerment.

The event, which took place at the Kwale County headquarters Wednesday, marked a significant step in boosting the agricultural sector.

The seedlings will be distributed across 9 wards, with each ward set to receive 555 trees.

Addressing residents during the launch, Governor Achani urged beneficiaries to plant the trees on time and nurture them diligently to ensure successful growth.

She emphasized the importance of taking farming seriously to enhance food security in the region.

“In order to ensure a food-secure Kwale, we must utilize every resource at our disposal, including these coconut seedlings. I urge all farmers to be diligent in their agricultural efforts,” said Achani.

In addition, the Governor assured farmers that all county-owned tractors with mechanical issues would be repaired to support land preparation and enhance productivity.

Local leaders also rallied behind the initiative, encouraging more youth participation in agriculture.

Tsimba/Golini MCA Mwachuo Mwaboza emphasized the importance of farming, noting that agriculture remains the backbone of Kenya’s economy.

“The County Government has invested heavily in agriculture. Let’s make good use of the farm inputs we receive to increase productivity,” Mwaboza stated.

Karama Pore, Chair of the Agriculture Committee in Tsimba/Golini Ward, expressed gratitude to the County Government for its support.

He highlighted the economic significance of coconut farming in the coastal region and urged residents to plant more trees rather than cutting them down for building materials.

“Coconut is the cash crop of the coastal region. Let’s protect and expand our coconut farming instead of destroying these valuable trees,” Pore said.

This initiative is expected to boost the livelihoods of Kwale farmers by increasing coconut production, which plays a vital role in the county’s economy.

The wards that will benefit from this exercise are Tsimba/Golini, Mkongani, Kubo South, Ramisi, Kinondo, Bongwe/Gombato, Vanga, Dzombo, and Pongwe/Kikoneni.
