Governor Kang’ata plans enhanced medical cover for residents

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has announced plans to partner with a private insurance company to provide enhanced medical coverage for residents.

“Unlike the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), the newly established Social Hospital Insurance Fund (SHIF) does not offer an enhanced scheme,” he noted.

Governor Kang’ata’s initiative aims to ensure that beneficiaries of the ‘Kang’ata Care’ program continue to receive medical services with additional benefits not covered under the new SHIF scheme.

He highlighted that the Kang’ata Care program includes a last-expense benefit, which SHIF does not provide unless the county pays extra for a benefits package.

In addition to the insurance plans, the governor says he is focused on improving primary health facilities in the area to reduce congestion at level four and five facilities.

“Under the new health program, patients will only be admitted to these higher-level facilities with a referral from level two and three facilities.”

The county is targeting the construction of 80 new dispensaries, increasing the total number to 200.

This expansion aims to ensure that residents have better access to primary healthcare.
