Four people died and scores of others sustained serious injuries after they were involved in a fatal accident in Awasi’s Pala area.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina confirmed the incident, stating that the driver of the ill-fated vehicle, two male passengers, and a woman died on the spot when the private Nissan van, which was travelling from Kericho to Kisumu, was involved in a crash.

His preliminary observation at the scene indicated that the driver lost control of the speeding car, causing it to veer off the road and plunge into a ditch.

“The only survivor, identified as Denise Otieno, 29, sustained a broken left arm and is undergoing treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital,” Maina said.

He stated that the deceased were taken to Othoo Private Funeral Home for a post-mortem as police commenced investigations into the actual cause of the fatal accident.

Maina, however, noted that most accidents occurring this festive season were due to factors such as driver fatigue, careless driving, speeding, or non-serviced vehicles, as families covered long distances to rural homes.

“Some of the accidents are attributed to human error caused by fatigue or unfamiliarity with new routes, and this calls for caution and adherence to traffic rules during the festive season,” Maina cautioned.
