Former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga arraigned over alleged possession of weapons

Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was on Monday arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts five days after he was arrested.

According to the charge sheet, Njenga has been charged with possession of offensive weapons including 14 machetes, Maasai swords, 46 rungus and three jembe sticks.

Njenga is charged alongside two other persons; Peter Njoroge Kamuya and Felix Ratu Lakishe.

“On 20th day of Juky 2023 at Kiserian area within Kajiado County, without reasonable excuse, were found in possession of offensive weapons to wit 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus and three jembe sticks in circumstances which raised reasonable presumption that the said offensive weapons were intended to be used in a manner prejudicial to public order,” the chargesheet read in part

The former Mungiki leader faces two other counts of organising unlawful assembly preparation to commit felony contrary to section 308 (1) of the penal code.

Njenga was arrested on 21st July, 2023 at his father’s residence in Nalepo area within Kiserian, Kajiado County along with the two others suspects.

The trio were arrested in connection to the three-day antigovernment protests held last week from Wednesday July 19 to Friday July 21.
