Former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament for Chepalungu, John Koech, has passed away while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

President William Ruto led the nation in paying tribute to the late Koech, describing him as a leader dedicated to serving the people.

“Mheshimiwa John Koech was a hardworking leader who served the people of Chepalungu with dedication. He was focused, progressive, and development-conscious,” said the President in his condolence message.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula remarked that Koech was a champion of access, equity, and excellence in education, particularly in the former Kericho and Bomet districts, where he opened doors for countless young minds.

“I had the honour of serving alongside Hon. Koech during the transformative era of President Mwai Kibaki’s administration. In him, I witnessed a man of rare political clarity—principled, astute, and unwavering in his pursuit of national progress,” said the Speaker, noting that Kenya has lost a great leader.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also conveyed his condolences on the passing of Koech, describing him as an embodiment of servant leadership and firm principles.

“Genuinely concerned with the economic predicament of his constituents, he rallied them to pool resources to start viable enterprises. He wore many hats—MP, diplomat, and minister—but he never lost the common touch,” noted the Interior CS, disclosing that the former MP mentored and encouraged him to pursue a career in politics.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of his demise. I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Chepalungu, whom he ably represented in Parliament for a long time,” added Murkomen.
