First Lady joins KU fraternity to mourn students who died in Maungu accident

The First Lady, Mama Rachel Ruto Sunday joined family members, the Kenyatta University fraternity, and education sector stakeholders to mourn 11 students from the Department of Health Management and Informatics at Kenyatta University who passed away following a road accident in Maungu, Taita Taveta County.

Mama Rachel Ruto eulogised the 11 students as future leaders that the nation has lost, who would have been of influence in different spheres of life and brought pride and joy to their families and communities.

She further urged the nation to keep praying for the full recovery of the 47 students who sustained injuries and are currently recuperating.

The first lady further urged all motorists to exercise extra caution at all times on the road and be more vigilant and courteous to ensure the safety of all road users.

The 11 students died when their bus was hit by a lorry at Maungu, Taita Taveta County.

Confirming the incident, Voi Sub-county Police Commander Ibrahim Daffala said, “The accident occurred at a time when it was raining heavily. The lorry tried to move away from the road to avoid a head-on collision leading to the accident.”
