An Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) pupil in Kaloleni, Kilifi County has died after being struck by a flying iron sheet due to strong winds in the Coastal region.
Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro ordered a one-week closure of all ECDE centers to monitor the situation in the county.
Mung’aro further revealed that the strong winds caused trees and electricity poles to fall, blocking roads in Takaungu.
“The strong wind witnessed on Tuesday caused several damages, with some trees falling and closing roads in Takaungu and some electricity poles also falling, endangering the lives of the people,” he said.
The Governor directed the county disaster team to aid affected families and ensure people avoid trees and unsafe structures that pose risks to their lives.
He also urged residents to exercise caution and avoid engaging in marine activities as the region experiences powerful winds along its coastline due to Storm Ialy.
Meanwhile, Kilifi North Deputy County Commissioner Samuel Mutisya has advised residents to stay away from the beaches and avoid seeking shade under trees in the area that could easily fall due to the strong winds.
Mutisya noted that the effects of the winds are already being experienced, including the blowing away of the parking lot at the county commissioner’s office, which resulted in the destruction of one of the government vehicles.
Residents have been urged to call the county emergency number 1535 for a quick response to any disasters or emergencies.
