The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Attorney General have joined the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in opposing the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes (Amendment) Bill, 2023 sponsored by Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Kariuki Ruku.
The institutions tasked with dealing with corruption termed it dangerous and a backward step in the fight against corruption.
The Bill seeks to decriminalize corruption and instead make it dealt with administratively.
The institutions state that if considered by parliament, two key corruption offenses that exist to protect public funds from embezzlement and to enforce accountability among the public officials involved in the administration of public resources will be eroded thus mutilating the legal framework for the fight against corruption.
The institutions are now calling upon Parliament to reject the bill in its entirety.
