The DCI Homicide detectives have provided an update on their investigation into the tragic murder of Rita Waeni, aged 20, whose life was brutally cut short in January 2024.

According to reports, Waeni, a third-year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, had been residing with her aunt in Syokimau, Nairobi.

On January 13, 2024, at approximately 3 pm, she left her home, never to return alive.

Authorities have disclosed that extensive forensic analyses have been conducted by the investigative team, shedding light on the victim’s final moments and establishing potential links to her assailant(s).

Furthermore, detailed statements from individuals of interest have been obtained, alongside digital data sourced to exhaust all avenues in the pursuit of justice for Rita.

Despite concerted efforts, the primary suspect in the case, a man captured by CCTV cameras accompanying Rita to the location of her tragic demise, remains at large.

The DCI Homicide team is reportedly deploying all available resources in their relentless pursuit of the suspect.

In a bid to expedite the investigation and provide closure to Rita’s family, the Homicide Directorate has issued a public appeal for assistance.

They urge anyone who may recognize the individual depicted in the blurry images released to come forward with any relevant information that could aid in his apprehension.

“Share any information on the suspect’s identity or whereabouts, please #FichuakwaDCI through our toll-free hotline 0800 722 203, or report to any police station or police officer.”

Though the suspect’s identity remains elusive, investigators have determined that he initially initiated contact with the late Waeni via an Instagram account under the alias “Carlton Maina” on October 2, 2023.

This pseudonym underwent several changes before being deactivated immediately following the heinous crime.

Authorities believe the suspect frequented various hotels in Nairobi West in October 2023, as well as the Green House Airbnb located in Roysambu along TRM Drive on November 7 and November 11, 2023.

Described as having a criminal mindset, the suspect has displayed a knack for evading surveillance cameras.

He is reported to be proficient in both Swahili and English and possesses a sound knowledge of Nairobi and its surroundings.
