David Kibet Kemei has been appointed to the position of Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) director general with effect from October 7, 2024.
The appointment follows a joint vetting and approval by both the National Assembly and the Senate last week.
“Mr Kemei believes that a strong competition regime is the backbone of a thriving economy and under his stewardship, the authority will continue to enhance stakeholder collaboration, safeguard market integrity and efficiency, and align them with global best practices to address emerging challenges in the dynamic economic landscape in Kenya, regionally and internationally,” said Shaka Kariuki, CAK Chairman.
Kemei boasts 30 years of experience in various fields among them, regulatory, finance, health, tourism and insurance.
According to Kariuki, Kemei who is now the second director general of the competition authority joins the institution at a time when consumers in Kenya are agitating for market that work efficiently and have access to variety of innovative goods and services at competitive prices.
“The authority’s role is ensuring consumers’ rights are upheld by businesses, as stipulated in the Constitution of Kenya and buttressed in the Act is even sharper focus in our vibrant digital marketplace, which exposes consumers to exploitation,” added Kariuki.
Kemei who holds Master’s degree in Business Administration and Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the University of Nairobi takes over from Dr Adano Wario who has held the position in an acting capacity since January 2023.
