Cybercriminals sustain attacks on Kenyan systems, threats up 27pc

Kenya cyber threats increased by 27.2pc to 840.9 million between October and December last year on higher internet use during the festive period.

The second quarter statistics by the Communications Authority indicate that the total number of cyber threats between the period increased from 661.2 million reported during the first quarter between July and November.

“In response to cyber threat events detected, the National KE-CIRT/CC issued 11.6 million advisories marking 20.9pc increase compared to last quarter,” said CA.

The largest increase of threats detected were denial of service attack (DDOS) which increased by 726.6pc to 15.1 million from 1.8 million reported during the previous quarter.

Threats from system vulnerabilities also increased by 28.9pc to 752.4 million while web application attacks also increased by 29pc to 4.5 million from 3.5 million. Similarly, mobile application attacks went up by 17.4pc, from 117,661 to 138,175.

CA also says malware advisories increased by 41.9pc to 404,598 from 285,133 reported in the first quarter.

Total advisories issued during the period increased by 20.9pc from 9.6 million to 11.6 million.

According to CA, the number of users registered to.KE domain grew by 1.3pc to 108,154.

However users registered to Personal Websites and E-mail dropped by 24.6pc to 3,462 by end of December2024.

During the second quarter, mobile broadband subscriptions increased by 12.3pc to 44.5 million from 37.4 million while mobile data subscription also increased by 4.5pc to 56.1 million from 53.7 million.

Smartphone adoption continue to increase with the availability of 4G and 5G connection. During the period, the number of active smartphones increased by 10.9pc, from 37.4 million to 41.5 million.

“Mobile phone devices connected to mobile networks maintained an upward trend to post 72 million translating to penetration rate of 139.8pc. Notably, smart phones maintained an upward trend at a penetration rate of 80.5pc while feature phones dropped to 59.3pc. The rapid uptake in smartphones is attributable to the increased expansion of mobile broadband networks across the country that currently stands at 97pc population coverage,” CA stated.
