Kilifi South Member of Parliament Ken Chonga and three others have been granted a bond of Ksh 100,000 with an alternative of Ksh50, 000 cash bail.
The Kilifi MP alongside Kilifi Speaker Teddy Mwambire, his aide Victor Katana and Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo’s aide Patrick Charo spent the weekend behind bars after a Magistrate Court deferred the ruling on their bond application to Monday.
They were arrested on Wednesday during the anti-government demonstrations in Mtwapa in Kilifi South.
However, Principal Prosecution Counsel Alex Gituma had opposed the release of four accused persons on bond, claiming that the politicians and their aides would also interfere with the investigation and threaten witnesses.
The four are charged with an offence of participating in unlawful assembly contrary to section 78(1) as read with section 79 of the penal code, chapter 63 of laws of Kenya.
The four allegedly assembled and demonstrated on 19 July, 2023, at Mtwapa area in Kilifi South Sub-County of Kilifi County, thereby causing public fear and a breach of peace.
The case will be mentioned on 8 August, 2023.
