The government has launched the construction of a modern market in Watamu, Kilifi County. This project is the first of its kind under the Affordable Housing and Markets program to be initiated in the region.
The market, which will be under the Economic Stimulus Plan will cost over Ksh50 million
Addressing the media during the launch, Affordable Housing and Markets Coast Regional Lead John Karanja stated that plans are underway to set in motion similar markets in four other areas across the county.
”In Kilifi we have advertised other four similar projects; in Ganze, Kaloleni, Kilifi South, and Kilifi North. The advert is currently running in print media and the tender will close on the 28th of this month”, Karanja said.
He further disclosed that the construction of the Watamu Modern Market is expected to be completed in six months, with local business people set to occupy the new facility by December this year.
Karanja emphasized the project’s inclusive approach, highlighting the significant role of the Juakali sector in providing supplies and construction services, which will stimulate the local economy.
Kilifi North Member of Parliament (MP) Owen Baya urged the contractor to prioritize local resources and labor to further support the community.
“You should ensure that you give the local people a chance to earn an income during the construction of this market. There will be no need to source materials and labourers from outside the county,” Baya said.
The new market aims to boost economic activity in the region, providing a modern, organized space for local traders and contributing to the overall development of Kilifi County.
