Kenyan volleyball star Janet Wanja is dead following a battle with gallbladder cancer. Ms Wanja died on December 26, her family confirmed.
Following the announcement of her death, Kenyan personalities and celebrities have mourned her loss, lauding her achievements and her discipline.
First among them was President William Ruto who said she served her country in sports with honour and dedication.
“Janet Wanja, a gifted and disciplined volleyball star, served the cause of our country’s sports with honour and dedication. She was focused, hardworking and a team player,” the President said. “May it be comfort to her family, friends and the wider sports fraternity that we are praying for them at this tough and difficult time.”
The First Lady, Mama Rachel Ruto also celebrated Ms Wanja and said she “left an indelible mark.”
“Janet Wanja has left an indelible mark on our sports. Her remarkable talent and passion for volleyball will forever be celebrated and remembered with gratitude,” the First Lady said. “Our heartfelt love and prayers go out to her family, friends and the many fans whose lives she touched and inspired.”
Other government officials also shared their condolences including Principal Secretary for Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Dr Raymond Amollo who said her loss was a blow to the nation.
“We join Kenyans and the sporting family in mourning the untimely demise of Janet Wanja, a volleyball icon who inspired countless young athletes with her unmatched talent and determination,” he said. “Her loss is not just a blow to her family and friends but to the entire nation.”
Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti said she devastated by the loss.
“I’m devastated by the passing on of the volleyball Maestro, Janet Wanja,” she said. “My heartfelt condolences to the volleyball fraternity in the world which includes Kwanthanze secondary school volleyball team whom I have associated with for sometime now.”
Media Personality Linus Kaikai called cancer cruel as he honoured Ms Wanja’s legacy.
“Cruel cancer. Rest in peace our heroine Janet Wanja. Thank you for the pride and honour you bestowed upon our flag and our country,” he said.
Sports Personality Carol Radul sent her condolences to the family.
“Our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones,” she said.
Internet Personality Jeff Kinyanjui called Ms Wanja a “volleyball icon.”
“My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Janet Wanja. A true volleyball icon, she inspired countless lives, and her legacy in the sport will always be cherished,” he said.
Ms Wanja’s fans and friends including comedian Eric Omondi continue to celebrate and mourn her loss.
