The Communications Authority (CA) is calling on the Nairobi City County Government and Kenya Power to seek amicable ways of solving their differences which led to disruption of internet services in some parts of the city.
County officials on Tuesday removed fibre optic cables mounted on Kenya Power poles over unpaid wayleave fees as the dispute between the two parties escalate.
The retaliatory actions which affected businesses in the city was triggered by the utility cutting off power supply to most county offices last week over Ksh 3 billion unpaid power bill.
“Preliminary inquiries indicate that the actions of Nairobi County stem from a dispute over wayleave fees and alleged non-compliance by Kenya Power regarding the use of public infrastructure,” said CA in a statement.
The authority now wants the county to halt the removal of fibre optic cables as it engages the two parties to establish the facts and ensure that any enforcement measures are orderly and comply with due process and national policy.
“We urge all parties to exercise restraint, observe and respect public interest as they work towards an amicable solution. Any unlawful, unilateral action that undermines connectivity should cease forthwith,” said the authority.
CA has further urged consumers and businesses affected by yesterday’s service disruption to contact their service providers for updates and support.
