ICT CS Owalo to launch free public WiFi in Ahero Market

Information, Communication and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo is set to launch free public WiFi in Ahero Market in Kisumu County.

The event will take place on Wednesday,  28th, December,  2022 starting at 9AM.

Last week on Wednesday CS Owalo during an interview on KBC Channel 1 TV pointed out major achievements of the Kenya Kwanza administration as the government crossed the 100 days mark since President William Ruto took oath of office in September.

He outlined the launch of the hustler fund, reduction of fertiliser prices, launch of over 10,000 housing units and the ongoing connection of free internet across the country as some of the government's achievements in a span of less than 100 days.

Owalo underscored the role of ICT in the realisation of the government's agenda to enable a digitally driven economy saying leveraging on technology will be key in creating jobs for the youth.

So far, the government has installed free Wi-Fi hotspots in Wakulima market, City market and Nyeri town market as well as the establishment of a digital hub at the Kabete Youth Polytechnic.

The CS will be joined by the Kisumu County Leadership and political class.

Owalo said the government is exploring avenues to ensure Kenya moves from being a consumer of technology to a producer of ICT software and hardware in the future.

“We want to introduce infrastructure of 100,000km of fibre optic network so that counties that had not been enabled with ICT infrastructure have access to internet. We are also introducing 25,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots across the country. We want to ensure Kenya becomes the first manufacturer of the cheapest smartphone in Africa,” he said.

He will also be accompanied  by ICT Authority Leadership led by Board Chairman , Professor Fredrick Owino.

The move is part of the government's plan to enable a digitally driven economy.
