The proprietors of a beauty clinic and a surgeon linked to the death of a businesswoman following a botched surgery last year in Lavington, Nairobi, are set to face manslaughter charges.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has approved the charges against Robert Maweu Mutula, a surgeon, George Wakaria Njoroge, and Lilian Edna Wanjiru of Body by Design operated by Omnicare Medical Limited located on Kabarsiran Avenue in Nairobi County.
This follows the death of 47-year-old Lucy Wambui Kamau on October 26, 2024, due to complications just days after undergoing cosmetic surgery at the facility.
The accused were initially scheduled to take their plea on Tuesday, April 1, but missed the court appearance, prompting the court to reschedule the hearing for tomorrow, Wednesday. Their lawyer stated that the suspects had been granted anticipatory bail by the High Court.
Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Samson Temu directed the suspects to appear in court by 9:00 a.m.
The Ministry of Health and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council ordered the closure of the clinic due to several violations, including unlawfully operating a health institution without the necessary license, failing to meet required medical standards, and not adhering to patient safety regulations.
The decision was informed by a nationwide assessment of clinics offering plastic surgery procedures by the government.
