Blinken to arrive in Israel shortly, meet Palestinian President Friday

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Israel today in a show of support for the country.

Blinken will also meet Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, according to the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The UN has called for essential supplies of food, fuel and water to be allowed to reach civilians in Gaza.

Palestinian health officials say 1,200 people have died in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. The toll from the Hamas weekend attack is also 1,200, Israeli officials say.

The UN says that the number of people displaced in Gaza has risen to 383,000.

The US is in talks with Israel, the UN and Egypt on allowing some aid in and residents out, the White House says.

Gaza’s only power station has shut down, after Israel cut off electricity supplies as well as goods including medicines, food, fuel and water.
