AU reaffirms support for Somalia’s stability, development

The African Union has reaffirmed its unwavering support for development and peacebuilding efforts in Somalia.

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf arrived in Mogadishu Sunday, for a two-day official visit to Somalia where he was received by Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama upon arrival at Aden Adde International Airport, along with cabinet ministers and senior officials from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

In a statement on X, the African Union Commission Chairperson Youssouf commended Somalia’s continued progress in advancing stability, governance, and regional integration.

He emphasised the significance of his visit, being his first official trip since assuming office, underscoring the African Union’s commitment to supporting Somalia.

“As a founding member of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor to the African Union Commission, Somalia remains steadfast in its commitment to continental unity, solidarity, and multilateral cooperation.”

On his part, the Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, expressed appreciation for the Chairperson’s visit, underscoring the shared vision of strengthening collaboration between Somalia and the AU.

The visit will feature high-level engagements with the country’s leadership and African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
