Athletics Kenya cancels Africa Games Trials in honour of Kiptum

Athletics Kenya (AK) has cancelled the African Games Trials that were scheduled for this weekend.

This comes after the untimely demise of World marathon record holder, Kelvin Kiptum who succumbed to the injuries sustained in a grizzly accident that occurred along the Eldoret – Eldama Ravine road on Sunday night.

In a statement released by AK, the two-day event that was set to be held this Friday and Saturday at the Nyayo Stadium has been cancelled with a new selection process to be announced.

Kiptum, in the company of his Rwandese coach, Gervais Hakizimana died in the tragic incident that saw the car veer off the road into a ditch before hitting a tree.

Before his demise, Kiptum was the reigning World marathon record holder with a time of 2:00:35 and also the first person in history to run a marathon in under two hours one minute.

He was also set to be a superstar in the long- distance runs and was a top contender for gold at the Olympics in Paris this year.

AK, has set the upcoming tournament in the honour of their memory.
