China has dispatched a rescue team known as the China International Search and Rescue (CISAR) to assist in disaster relief efforts following a devastating magnitude-7.7 earthquake that jolted Myanmar on Friday, causing severe casualties and infrastructure damage.

On Sunday evening, the 118-member Chinese rescue team, carrying rescue equipment and supplies, departed from Beijing for Nay Pyi Taw, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management.

Founded in 2001, the Chinese rescue team has participated in more than 20 international rescue operations and was certified by the United Nations as a heavy Urban Search and Rescue team.
