The Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) has condemned the recent acts of police brutality following the shooting of Mediamax journalist Catherine Wanjeri and the arrest of veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho.
Wanjeri was shot during Nakuru protests yesterday, while Gaitho was arrested this morning, in what police claim is a case of mistaken identity.
AMWIK Executive Director Quinter Mbori stated that such acts of violence are not only direct attacks on journalists but also attacks on the freedom of the press.
“The Association of Media Women in Kenya condemns the abduction of veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho, saying that such acts of violence are not only direct attacks on journalists but also attacks on the freedom of the press,” said Mbori.
She underscored the vital role journalists play in informing the public and holding those in power to account, stating that they should be allowed to do their jobs without fear of intimidation.
“AMWIK remains committed to advocating for the safety and protection of journalists and their right to report freely,” she added.
Earlier, the Media Council of Kenya condemned the blatant use of brute force against journalists, an aspect that has since drawn condemnation from various stakeholders.
