United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday sustained calls for reforms at the Security Council, decrying the lack of representation for Africa.

He pointed out that Africa has been a victim of compounded injustices, having been under colonial domination when the current multilateral system was established, and that this same injustice persists today. He specifically referenced the situation at the United Nations Security Council, insisting that it is inexcusable for Africa to still lack permanent representation in the 21st century.

“I will keep working with the African Union and all Member States to ensure the representation Africa needs and the justice you deserve – including with two permanent members of the Security Council,” Guterres stated at the opening of the 38th African Union Summit on Saturday in Ethiopia.

Guterres also advocated for the reform of the international financial architecture, which he described as outdated, dysfunctional, and unfair. He expressed confidence that, with commitment, these reforms can be achieved.

“Correcting age-old injustices is essential to address here-and-now challenges. And the good news is that we have many of the solutions we need,” he told the gathering of heads of state.

He emphasized that the United Nations stands in solidarity with the African Union to advance security, stability, human rights, and the rule of law.
