Kenya Railways has temporarily suspended all commuter train services over Azimio protests planned for Wednesday to Friday.
In a public notice by the Managing Director, the Corporation said the move is a precautionary measure following recent attacks on trains by protestors endangering the lives of passengers.
The routes affected include Nairobi Commuter Rail Service trains serving between Nairobi Central Station and Lukenya, Syokimau, Embakasi Village, Ruiru, Kahawa West and Limuru 2.
Commuter Passenger Service between Nairobi Terminus and Ngong station will also not be operational.
“Kenya Railways wishes to notify our customers and members of the public that all commuter train services will temporarily be suspended on Wednesday, July 19, 2023. This is a precautionary measure arising from recent incidents where our stations were vandalised and trains stoned, putting passengers’ lives at great risk” said the state corporation.
“The Corporation is compelled to take these measures as the safety of our customers is, and will always be of paramount importance to us. We will advise you once normal services resume and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused” it added.
The three-day anti-government protests called by Opposition leader Raila Odinga have been outlawed by the government but the Azimio coalition has vowed to push on until the high cost of living among other concerns is addressed.
