The critically acclaimed Kenyan crime thriller It’s a Free Country is set to make its public debut on streaming platforms starting December 21.

Written and directed by John ‘JJ’ Jumbi, the film which premiered on December 11, has captured the attention of audiences and critics alike for its bold take on crime, politics, and social disparity in modern Kenya.

It’s a Free Country is a satirical yet gritty narrative that explores the lives of a group of friends whose world spirals out of control after a seemingly routine job goes horribly wrong.

The high-stakes drama showcases the lengths to which individuals will go to survive, offering sharp commentary on societal structures that perpetuate inequality.

The film features a stellar cast, including Elsaphan Njora, Kalekye Mumo, Eddy Kimani, Neville Ignatius, Julie Brenda Nyambura, Mugambi Nthiga, Bilal Wanjau, and Lorna Lemi.

These actors deliver compelling performances that bring to life a story laced with tension, humour, and heartbreak.

Artchatterbox, the production team behind the movie, revealed that the project which began two years ago as a crowdfunded venture, was anything but easy.

In a heartfelt message on social media, they shared the rollercoaster experience of creating the film:

“Through financial uncertainties, delayed production, demanding schedules, and everything in between, it is truly by grace that we were able to premiere It’s a Free Country to a beautiful crowd of 1,023 people. You guys came through and full-housed an auditorium. Ala! Poleni bas. Asante sana.”

With its imminent release on PhilitTV, It’s a Free Country promises to bring the magic of Kenyan cinema into homes during the holiday season.
