The Huawei DigiTruck programme is making significant progress in enhancing digital skills among Kenyans, particularly in rural and remote areas of the country.
This initiative is so far proving to be an essential resource for improving digital literacy, especially in disadvantaged communities. Since its launch, the DigiTruck has been delivering training aimed at empowering young individuals.
Its impact has attracted many participants, leading to its expansion across various constituencies in Kenya, where it is now regarded as a key effort in bridging the digital divide.
Just last week, Huawei Kenya, in partnership with local stakeholders, celebrated the graduation of 180 young individuals who successfully completed the Huawei DigiTruck programme in Nairobi’s Dagoretti South constituency.
According to area Member of Parliament John Kiarie, the ceremony represents a significant milestone in equipping the next generation of tech leaders with the digital skills necessary to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving ICT industry.
“In today’s world, no discipline stands alone independent of technology. If you think education, you have to think EduTech, for Agriculture, AgriTech, finance, FinTech, if you think Health, you have to think HealthTech and so on. Meaning that, Digital Skills, today, are as important as basic literacy and numeracy,” said Kiarie.
“That is why we are so grateful for this Dagoretti South Partnership with Huawei and Computer for Schools where we are equipping 189 deserving School Leavers with the Basic Digital Literacy Skills in the Huawei DigiTruck programme. It’s an innovative class on wheels,” he added.
During the programme, Huawei Kenya’s media director, Khadija Mohammed Ahmed, noted that participants developed solutions to address local community challenges, demonstrating how technology can drive change.
“We are incredibly proud of the 180 graduates. Their dedication and passion for learning have positioned them to make meaningful contributions to the digital economy,” she said.
“This is not just a graduation; it marks the beginning of a new chapter for these talented young people. Through the Huawei ICT Academy, they now have access to global opportunities that will help them continue growing and innovating in the ICT field,” Khadija added.
The Huawei DigiTruck initiative aims to bridge the digital divide by providing accessible ICT training in underserved communities. Participants receive training in essential skills such as cloud computing, coding, and digital literacy, preparing them for the future of work in the technology sector, in line with the government’s agenda of building a digital workforce and economy.
The Kenyan government and Huawei have reaffirmed their partnership to expand the DigiTruck initiative, ensuring ongoing support for digital skills training as part of Kenya’s broader digital transformation agenda.
Launched in 2019 as part of Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative, the DigiTruck is a mobile, solar-powered classroom designed to provide free digital skills training to youth in remote areas of Kenya. It travels to hard-to-reach communities, offering courses in essential digital skills.
Each DigiTruck session lasts approximately 40 hours and covers various topics, including cloud computing, coding, digital literacy, and soft skills such as job application techniques and online business management.
