Fisherman killed in Lake Victoria fishing grounds dispute

A 23-year-old fisherman, Jacob Odira, has been killed in a conflict over fishing grounds on Lake Victoria.

Odira lost his life during a fishing expedition near Lela Beach in Homa Bay Sub-County after being attacked by rival fishermen.

He was fishing with four colleagues in their designated area, near the boundary with Rachuonyo North Sub-County, when the attack occurred.

The group was ambushed by fishermen from the nearby Ndhuru, Kamwai, and Sikri beaches in Mbita Sub-County.

The assailants, who arrived in two boats, launched a violent assault using stones and glass bottles.

In the ensuing chaos, Odira fell into the lake and drowned. His body has yet to be recovered.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Hassan Barua confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are underway to bring those responsible to justice.
