Gor Mahia thump El Merreikh to set a date with defending Champions Al Ahly

Gor Mahia FC thrashed minnows El Merreikh Bentiu of South Sudan 5-1 in the CAF Champions League 1st preliminary return leg played on Sunday at the Nyayo stadium, to book a date with defending Champions Al Ahly SC from Egypt in the last preliminary round.

Rooney Onyango scored a brace, adding to a goal each from Alpha Onyango, Alpha Omija, and Chris Ochieng, to seal a resounding victory in front of home fans led by the  Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The consolation for the visitors was scored by Samuel Akinbinu.

K’ogalo qualified for the 2nd preliminary round with an aggregate win of 5-2 after losing by a lone goal in the 1st leg last Sunday in Juba.

Kenyan Premier League Champions will now meet Al Ahly in the last preliminary round, with the first leg set for Nairobi on September 14 and the return leg a week later in Cairo.

The winner of the contest will book a slot in the lucrative group stage of the tournament.
