Universities are currently in the process of issuing new admission letters to students who will be joining them in September. This is in compliance with President William Ruto’s directive, as confirmed by the Ministry of Education.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos has stated that the revised letters now specify the amount of money that each household is required to contribute towards the total cost of a degree program, as per the instructions from the head of state.

“In line with the President’s directive, the Ministry is pleased to announce that all universities have rolled out the process of releasing new letters to all the first batch of 125,893 students who have so far applied for loans and scholarships under the Student-Centred Model,” he said in a statement Friday

The Cabinet Secretary has further emphasized that universities have been instructed to ensure that all first-year students receive their admission letters by Monday, August 19th, 2024.

In line with the Student-Centred Model, the Minister has explained that all students enrolling in the university have been granted scholarships and loans based on their level of financial need. This, he said, is determined by one of the five predetermined bands.

“The Government re-affirms its commitment to quality and affordable higher education, and is set to disburse KSh. 25.3 Billion in scholarships and loans to the 2024/25 students who have applied so far,” he said

He added; “The Ministry remains dedicated to ensuring that student funding is allocated fairly and equitably, addressing the genuine needs of applicants. The evaluation criteria – based on validated application information – consider a student’s family economic background, affirmative action, socio-demographic factors, and family education expenditures,”

Furthermore, the Minister has encouraged those with any questions or concerns regarding the fees to be paid to contact the relevant authorities for prompt resolution. Additionally, he has urged those who have not yet applied for funding to do so as soon as possible.

“In line with the Government’s commitment to leaving no one behind, the application portal will remain open. The Ministry assures that all additional applications will be processed swiftly on a rolling basis. We urge eligible students who wish to receive funding and have not yet applied to do so without delay to ensure prompt processing of their applications,” he said
