Don’t write us off, teams of former addicts speak

Kirigu Reformed FC vs Chini ya Mzazi FC play in Dagoretti South under the Dorcas Rigathi Foundation Health Soccer Tournament, where Kirigu won 4 against Chini ya Mzazi 1 on Saturday.

The Easter weekend was full of football action in Dagoretti South Constituency. Teams of reformed men from alcohol, drug, and substance addiction met in different fields for exhilarating football action.

On Friday, Sikai Sana FC faced off with Kambe FC at Kirigu Primary School Grounds in an exciting match where Sikai won 3 goals against Kambe, which managed 1 goal.

On Saturday, Kirigu Reformed met with Chini ya Mzazi team. Kirigu Reformed scored three superb goals, and sealed their win with one penalty after Chini ya Mnazi made a foul. Kirigu reformed won 4, against Chini ya Mzazi 1.

On Easter Monday afternoon, Kaa Sober FC will play against Portmore FC at Kabiria Primary Grounds.

The players, who had changed their lives from dependency on alcohol and drugs, said their lives were being renewed, and should not be written off by the society, and judged based on their past lives.

The games are played under the Dorcas Rigathi Foundation Health Soccer Tournament geared towards fighting alcohol, drugs, and substance abuse; and encouraging the youth to engage in productive leisure activity.

Clinton Garivo, Kambe FC Captain encouraged his team members despite losing to Sikai Sana FC.

He said the division games were an exciting elimination stage as they build up to the quarter finals where eight teams will qualify.

Captain of Sikai Sana FC, David Muiruri, urged the youth to say no to alcohol and drugs and engage in sporting activities, and other life-transformative events for the growth and development of the nation.

“When we meet for practice, it is a great opportunity for peer-to-peer counselling, and the tournament is building us up physically, mentally and socially,” said Muiruri.

Last week, a short video was shared on social media when Governor Johnson Sakaja read out names of young men who suspiciously died from drinking ‘poison’ in the name of alcohol. He singled out Dagoretti South as one of the most affected by the killer brews.

The office of the spouse of the Deputy President (OSDP) conducted a medical camp in Dagoretti South months ago, for screening those in addictions where those who were willing were taken for rehabilitation.

The football tournament is part of the spouse of the Deputy President Pastor Dorcas Rigathi bigger goal of ‘dignifying the lives of men from alcohol and drugs’.

“Our boys and men are the seed carriers, and must be rescued from alcohol and drugs,” Pastor Dorcas says in different forums.

The OSDP has three pillars that include boy child, widows and orphans, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and the foundation is Chaplaincy, Outreach, and Family Values.
