President of UNEA-6 and Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development of Morocco, Leila Benali has called for quality and impact in UNEA’s resolutions.
Benali expressed gratitude to the dedicated participants tirelessly working to advance negotiations in her opening address during the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) which is in full swing in Nairobi, Kenya.
“We are all working long hours and days to move the negotiations forward,” she acknowledged. “I would really want to thank you all for your patience and for bringing the spirit of consensus and unity in these negotiations,” said Benali.
President Benali, said UNEA has produced over 90 resolutions that have catalyzed action on critical issues and have left a lasting impact. However, she urged stakeholders to use the session to reaffirm their commitment, foster cooperation, and drive transformative change.
“In 2024, the international community is looking to us to deliver,” she asserted. “This is our moment to advance the global environmental agenda,” she said.
She urged delegates to build on the pledges made in previous sessions and leverage the processes that occur between UNEA gatherings.
“We are living in a time of turmoil,” she noted. “In 2022, we witnessed the start of a major conflict in this very room. Today, we face at least two major conflicts and geopolitical tensions with far-reaching implications,” said Benali.
