Kenya Ports Authority Women’s Basketball Club beat Rwanda Electricity Group ,REG, 87-53 to win the Zone Five title in Kigali ,Rwanda.The championship also acted as the inaugural Africa Women Basketball League scheduled December in Egypt.
KPA who had lost the championship to Egyptian side Alexandria,who gave this years tournament a wide berth,began brightly as the free scoring trio of Morgan Greene,Hilda Indasi and captain Natalie Mwangale Akinyi gave the Mombasa based side a 22-16 first quarter lead.
REG roared on by a capacity crowd made efforts to cut KPA’s lead reducing the deficit to 22-18 in the opening minutes of the second quarter but KPA widened the lead as Madina Okot and Victoria combined for points widening the lead to 26-18 lead.
Hilda Indasi and Regina Reynolds sustained their hot form scoring important points to hand KPA a 33-18 lead with five minutes to half time.
REG unsettled Kenyan’s defence as a rapid Kayoze scored six points in succession helping the hosts reduce the margin to within 14 points as KPA went into the breather leading 44-30
The enthusiastic crowd was not relenting and REG appeared to feed from the energy coming off the blocks quicker as Chelsea Jennings and Anastacia Hays pulled the side back to the game,reducing KPA’s lead to within nine points at the time of the first TTO.
Unstopable Victoria Reynolds ,captain Natalie Akinyi and Madina Okot led kpa’s charge with the side racing to a 56-36 lead at the close of the third quarter and led 63-42 with just 10 minutes to play.
Kpa coached by Antony Ojukwu did not let up their stranglehold of the game with Natalie Akinyi,Madina Okot,and Victoria Reynolds 7 points giving Kenya Ports Authority unassailable 74-48 lead 6 minutes to full time.
KPA wrapped up the emphatic 87-53 win sealing their place in the pioneer edition of the Africa Women’s Basketball League scheduled December in Egypt.
Victoria Reynolds was named the tournaments MVP while Madina Okot grabbed the best centre award..
Another Kenyan side Equity Banks bagged Bronze after beating Uganda’s JKL Dolphins in the third place play off.
